Choosing a Yarn & Hook

Filet crochet is usually done with mercerized cotton thread and a small crochet hook. You can use any yarn or hook, but it's best to use a non-stretchy, non-fuzzy fiber for clean, robust lines.

Use the recommended hook size per your yarn.

Techniques

Filet crochet

This pattern uses 2 dc for a closed square and skip 2 st + ch 2 for an open square.

The foundation chain will be represented with 3 ch per square + 5 ch to represent the first square of the first row.

(20 squares * 3 ch) + 5 ch = 65 ch foundation chain

Scallop

5dc scallop: Skip 2 st, dc into 3rd st, ch 1, [dc into same st, ch 1]x3, dc into same st, skip 2, sl st into 3rd st

7dc scallop: Skip 2 st, dc into 3rd st, ch 1, [dc into same st, ch 1]x5, dc into same st, skip 2, sl st into 3rd st

The Body

Foundation Chain

ch 65

Row 1

Row 1 is 20 open squares

dc into the 5th ch from your hook, ch 2, skip 2 st, dc, [ch 2, skip 2, dc]x17, dc

Row 2

Row 2 is 20 open squares

ch 5, turn, skip 2 st, dc into 3rd st, [ch 2, skip 2 st, dc]x17, dc into 3rd ch of first square

Row 3-4 (Bottom)

Row 3 has open and closed squares. Follow the stitch grid for the pattern

Row 5-29 (Right body)

Crochet the right side of the piece

Row 5-29 (Left body)

Crochet the left side of the piece

Row 30-34 (Top)

Start next row, when you hit the end, instead of turning, connect the left & ride body with 14 ch and a sl st.

Finish the rest of the piece like normal.

The border

Row 1: sc edge

Make a sc edge to prepare to make the scallop border

sc 2 in each square except the corners. In corner squares: sc 2, ch 2, sc 2

Once you are around the entire piece, sl st into the first sc, cut your yarn.

Row 2: scalloped edge

Short side should have 5 5dc scallops. Long side should have x 5dc scallops. Each corner will have 1 7dc scallop

Start your scallop edge into the top right-corner working counter-clockwise around your piece.

Start in 3rd st from the top-right corner, slip and sc a new working yarn, make 5 5dc scallops along the top.

Into the top-left corner gap (the ch 2 gap), make a 7dc scallop.

Down the left side, make x 5dc scallops.

In the bottom-left corner, make a 7dc scallop.

Along the bottom edge, make 5 5dc scallops.

Into the bottom-right corner, make a 7dc scallop.

Up the right edge, make x 5dc scallops.

In the top-right corner, make a 7dc scallop.

Sl st into the first sc of your scallop border to finish.
